Preventing Surgical Site Infections with Collatamp G

Collatamp G can be applied in a number of surgeries:

  • GI/Abdominal
  • Cardiothoracic
  • Colorectal
  • Orthopedic
  • Vascular
  • Plastic
  • Diabetic foot ulcer (osteomyelitis)

Up to three Collatamp G sponges can be used, depending on the size of the area requiring hemostasis.

However, the patient's body weight and the total amount of gentamicin used should be taken into account.

In general, the number and size of the sponges should be selected so that a total dose of nine milligrams of gentamicin sulphate per kilogram of body weight is not exceeded.

Apply Collatamp G in Six Easy Steps

For safe and effective application of Collatamp G:

  1. Ensure that your patient does not have an allergy to protein or gentamicin.
  2. Remove the sterile inner package from the outer carton, and place on the surgical tray.
    • Sponges are either 10cm x 10cm x 0.5cm (200mg gentamicin sulphate) or 5cm x 20cm x 0.5cm (200mg gentamicin sulphate).
  3. Cut Collatamp G through the sterile package for desired use:
    • Sponge may then be cut, chopped, folded or rolled to best fit the surgical space.
    • Collatamp G has also been used in laparoscopic surgery and by grinding and mixing into bone cement in orthopedic surgery.
    • Because the gentamicin is evenly distributed across the sponge, manipulation will not alter dosing.
  4. Immediately prior to handling sponge, moisten gloves/forceps with saline, or dampen gloves to prevent premature sticking.
  5. Place the dry Collatamp G on the area to be treated, which should also be as dry as possible.
  6. Apply light pressure to the sponge until adhesion is achieved.

Because the gentamicin is evenly distributed across the collagen sponge, you can can be confident in the gentamicin concentration regardless of how Collatamp G is manipulated or implanted.
